Through St. Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal, the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center (JNRC) has its doors open for those who call Rome home. Last Friday, Temple University Rome sponsored a sold out Pakistani Fundraising dinner to support the refugees and asylum seekers that call JNRC their sanctuary.
The JNRC supports up to 250 guests daily with a safe environment, breakfast, and other basic necessities. With services such as language classes (Italian, French, and English), employment/skills clinics, legal and social advice, or navigation assistance, guests are supported with every assistance needed to begin life in Rome. In addition to JNRC assistance, many of the guests often apply their skills by producing pieces for purchase to support themselves.
The night was festive and incorporated performances of the rich cultures of the JNRC community. A full menu included favourites of Punjabi origin: papadum, tadka dal, chicken tikka masala, basmati rice, naan, fresh salad and rice pudding. Through the generosity of the student volunteers and interns, the dinner was a tranquil affair.
