Introducing our Student of the Week: Carly Phelan
Hello! My name is Carly and I am now a rising senior (this is surreal to be typing out) at Temple University studying Advertising with a concentration in Art Direction and minoring in Community Development. I’m extremely passionate about graphic design, sustainability and Philadelphia – my home city! This past semester, I have been interning for the Dean’s Office here at TUR, and one of my duties was to write the Student of the Week articles. I figured for the last article of the semester, I would take the opportunity to introduce myself.
Where are you from, where do you go to school and if you could live anywhere in the world; where would you live?
I’m from Oreland, Pennsylvania (which is a small suburb outside of Philadelphia), I go to Temple University Main and if I could live anywhere in the world I would probably choose Nice, France.
What’s something nobody knows about you?
I consume an unhealthy amount of Carrefour coffee yogurt.
How do you think attending Temple Rome this semester will help further your professional goals?
My internship with the Dean’s Office has definitely helped me to further my professional goals. I had the opportunity to network with students and professors from all over the world, sharpen skills related to my major (like WordPress and the Adobe Suite) as well as play a role in several large projects that kept the school running smoothly!
Rome is an ancient city filled with many secrets. What is your favorite hidden gem spot you’ve found in Rome or here at TUR? (study spot, park, favorite restaurant, anything!)
My favorite hidden gem spot has to be the Mexican restaurant La Cucaracha. Although I love Italian food, Mexican food will always be my favorite and La Cucaracha has some of the best chicken fajitas I’ve ever had! They also have a student discount on Mondays.
What would like to accomplish by the end of the semester here in Rome?
By the end of the semester, I would like know my way around Rome by memory. I would like to (generally) be able to travel around Rome without needing a map or directions.
What is your favorite class you’re taking this semester, and why? What are you most excited to learn about?
My favorite class this semester is Darkroom Photography, without a doubt. Our professor, Lucy Clink, is such a talented and intelligent artist and my classmates are genuinely some of the nicest and most encouraging people I’ve had the opportunity to meet here at TUR. Additionally, the process of shooting, developing and printing my own film photos is so rewarding and humbling. I would recommend this class to anyone and everyone, I can’t say enough good things about it! I never thought I would love a 5 hour studio class so much. I will probably miss this class most of all.
What advice would you give to students thinking about attending Temple Rome in the future?
I would advise students to budget your money wisely throughout the semester so you’re able to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way!
