Introducing our Student of the Week: Mia Heirakuji

Mia studies Marketing in Fox at Temple University Main, and she is currently wrapping up her final semester as a senior here at Temple University Rome! She is originally from Hawaii, but made her way to Philadelphia for college to play for The Temple Women’s Volleyball Team. In her free time, she loves to surf, cook and relax in cool coffee shops. After graduating in the spring, she plans on making her way to New York to pursue a career in Marketing. On behalf of TUR, we wish you the best of luck in all future endeavors, Mia!

Where are you from, where do you go to school and if you could live anywhere in the world; where would you live?

I am originally from Kailua, Hawaii and I go to Temple University. If I could live anywhere, I think I would still chose Hawaii. Even though it sounds lame, it’s the best place in the world.

What’s something nobody knows about you?

I have a 3 legged dog named Jo-Jo.

What is your major? How do you think attending Temple Rome this semester will help further your professional goals?

I studied Marketing in Fox, and attending TUR has helped me to further my adaptation skills. Being thrown into a new environment with a language barrier and many cultural differences was not an easy task. You have to use your internal knowledge to make decisions regarding the environment you’re in!

Rome is an ancient city filled with many secrets. What is your favorite hidden gem spot you’ve found in Rome or here at TUR? (study spot, park, favorite restaurant, anything!)

La Romana Gelateria is definitely my favorite spot. $2.50 for that double scoop medium cone. I love going after school because it’s right across the river, and recently I’ve been getting mango and lemon but I usually get chocolate and caramel with nuts!

What would like to accomplish by the end of the semester here at TUR?

By the end of the semester I would like to order a whole Italian dinner entirely in Italian to put my knowledge to the test (and hopefully get an A in Italian as well!)

What is your favorite class you’re taking this semester, and why? What are you most excited to learn about?

My favorite class is Darkroom Photography. It is so satisfying when you (successfully) develop your film and print beautiful pictures in the darkroom! I didn’t know how much work went into this type of art so I’ve grown a stronger appreciation for it. Also, Lucy Clink is the best!

What advice would you give to students thinking about attending Temple Rome in the future?

My advice would be to do a solo trip at least once during the semester. Traveling alone really forces you to step outside of your comfort zone and be independent! It could be as simple as doing a day-trip to Florence or Naples. I really enjoyed my solo trip to Copenhagen because I could go at my own pace, have a flexible schedule, and truly “live in the moment.”
