In this one-day intensive workshop students will gain full immersion into the technique of cyanotype printing.

The cyanotype printing process, often times called sun-printing or blue-printing, is known for the characteristic blue tone of the printed images. It is an unusual and exciting method for exposing and printing imagery; either through direct contact or from photographic transparency negatives. The range of possibilities is endless, and the blue appearance carries enduring alure for artists, photographers, and designers of all types.

This short workshop provides a complete introduction to the materials, methods, and possibilities of this unique printing process. The workshop will commence with a brief historical overview, followed directly by hands on experience: including mixing the light-sensitive emulsion, preparing printing papers, exposing imagery, and printing. Emphasis will be placed on the execution of multiple photographic prints so that each learner leaves with a collection of images and a greater understanding of the accessibility and possibility of cyanotype. All materials, including printing paper, are provided. An introductory email will be sent before the course in case participants wish to prepare imagery/materials ahead of time.

Learn to draw on a cell phone or tablet, with apps that offer a wide variety of features, using the tip of one’s finger or a digital pencil. Students begin with simple, linear drawing and later practice drawing with color, both opaque and transparent. The workshop concludes with the addition of photography as an integral part of the drawing process.

Participants must bring their own touch screen device (phone, tablet, or portable computer).

Participants learn how to properly form hand-made sheets of paper of varied sizes and textures, usable for drawing and printmaking. An immersion in the beauty of creating unique hand-made original papers. Participants create their own color imagery by multilayering different fibers such as pure cotton and linen prior to their pressing and drying. By the end of the workshop each student creates up to 10 sheets max. A3 size.

Participants will also learn how to set up a papermaker sheet-forming station, how to control the even distribution of the fibers, how to color pulp and mix pigments; they learn how to transfer a wet waterleaf on a press bed, draw in the pulp with various methods and cure the sheets for a flat drying.
