Melissa Ziegler, ’19

Melissa is a rising junior with a dual major in Political Science and Environmental Studies. She’s from Wheaton Illinois, a town outside of Chicago, and attends Temple University. Melissa’s hobbies include reading, walking her dog, and making way too many Spotify playlists. After graduation, she hopes to work on urban sustainability in the Philadelphia community!

Q&A with Melissa:

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?

I would love to live in Amsterdam! I really love their bike network and overall public transit system! I also really love tulips.

What is something that nobody knows about you?

I’ve never seen Roman Holiday and have no idea what it’s about. Everyone told me to see it before I came to Rome but I never did! I feel like it’s such a classic and perfect for studying here so I’ll have to watch it when I go back home.

What made you want to study abroad?

I’ve wanted to study abroad for as long as I knew that it was a thing I could do. I feel like it’s such a great way to learn new things and experience the world outside of your comfort zone. You learn to appreciate what you have in the States, and also learn what we could be doing better.

What is your favorite spot in Rome (place to study, eat, site-see, etc.)?

Best food spot so far is El Maiz! It’s a really good Venezuelan restaurant not too far from the Residence which is perfect if you need a break from pizza and pasta!

What is the coolest thing that you’ve done so far while abroad?

Seeing the Villa d’Este with my art history class was so incredible! I had no idea what to expect and I never would have gone there if not for that class. The gardens and fountains were unreal!

What do you like most about your classes at Temple University Rome?

I love the site visits. I’m taking Art History in Rome which is even more interesting when you can literally see right in front of you the art and architecture your professor is talking about.

What do you hope to get out of this experience and how will it help you with your professional goals?

I’m hoping to push myself outside of my comfort zone, learn about myself, and learn a whole new culture! Professionally, I think seeing firsthand all the cool little urban designs in Rome will give me new perspectives on cities in America. Like the free water fountains that are everywhere around the city!

What advice would you give to students thinking about attending Temple University Rome in the future?

No matter how mentally prepared you think you are to go abroad, nothing can really get you ready to live abroad if you’ve never done it before. Just go with the flow a little bit and you’ll find your place!
