Temple University Rome Campus moves to its new location on Via di San Sebastianello, adjacent to Piazza di Spagna

Temple University’s Rome campus opened to students on September 2nd in its new location at Via di San Sebastianello number 16, adjacent to the famous Spanish Steps, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as one of the world’s best-loved travel destinations. Its new home in the heart of what is known as the “Trident” area in Rome’s city center and its proximity to the Spanish Steps and numerous other historic sites and monuments ranging from the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum,  make Temple University’s new campus one of the most unique university locations in the world as well as a special and strategic starting point for students to immerse themselves in the Eternal City’s culture, history and art.

Temple University Rome celebrated its new campus location’s opening with two memorable events on September 25th for students and on September 26th for a wider audience of Temple University leadership and Board of Visitors members, local, American and international government officials, university partners and colleagues, friends, faculty and staff. The events took place on the university’s spectacular terrace right under Piazza Trinità dei Monti.

Guest speakers President Lorenza Bonaccorsi (President of Municipio Roma I), Ms. Karen Schinnerer (Cultural Attaché, U.S. Embassy in Rome), Temple University President Richard Englert, Temple University Provost Gregory Mandel, Temple Rome Dean and Temple University Vice Provost for Global Engagement Emilia Zankina, highlighted the wonderful partnership between the city of Rome and American institutions such as Temple University, in addition to the new and incredibly-immersive cultural experience that Temple Rome’s new location offers its students.

The main opening’s Roman-inspired catering was accompanied by the exceptional wine offered by Terre d'Aquesia Vigna & Cantina, with choices of Grechetto (Tuscia DOC Grechetto 2022), Aquesia Bianco  (Lazio IGT Bianco 2021), Il Molendino (Lazio IGT Rosso 2021), and RosaRotondo (Lazio IGT Rosato 2021).

The evenings also featured a live jazz band whose repertoire featured timeless classics such as Duke Ellington’s Take the A Train and Frank Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon (beautifully sang in accompaniment to the jazz trio on Sept. 25th by a Temple Rome student coincidentally called Frank!) brought a touch of magic together with the breathtaking view of the Church of Trinità dei Monti lit up against the night sky.

“We are thrilled to start this new chapter of Temple Rome as we build on our long history and strong foundation and expand our programming serving an ever larger and more diverse group of students from a wider breadth of disciplines, as well as growing our programs for young learners, adult learners, and engagement with the community,” said Emilia Zankina, Dean of Temple Rome and Vice Provost for Global Engagement, following on the statement given by Temple University Provost Gregory N. Mandel: “this new campus introduces even more opportunities for academic exploration and excellence –we’ll continue providing our students a world-class education by increasing the scope of what’s available to them.”

With just over eight months of renovation work, Temple Rome’s new campus facilities include full disability access,  state-of-the-art classrooms, printmaking, papermaking, sculpture, photography, visual arts and architecture studios and Temple Rome’s Gallery of Art, as well as a science lab, library, and conference center. A open-air courtyard and two large panoramic terraces with 360° views ranging from Piazza Trinità dei Monti to St. Peter’s Basilica and Rome’s city center skyline provide unique spaces for student life and events. As of January 2025, the campus will also feature a comfortable residence hall for first-year students with single/double rooms for a maximum of 50 beds.
