I applied to the Culture and Identity Envoy program because it offers a unique opportunity to explore my identity in a global context where I can engage with the diverse communities in Rome. As a first-generation college student with high financial needs, identity, culture, and social justice have been the pinnacles of my life. The program's focus on Afroitalian community culture, refugees, and migrant experience resonates deeply with my personal beliefs. I understand that connecting with these groups and learning about their stories can highlight the complexities of identity and migration in the city of Rome. It will be able to serve as a historical and contemporary crossroads of culture and something I would love to learn about. While In Rome I'm particularly interested in exploring how my identity would fit within the broader landscape. I want to reflect on concepts of race, migration, and belonging and how they shape personal beliefs as well as collective identities in Italy. I want to learn about historically marginalized groups in Rome and navigate their communities there. It will be able to overall deepen my understanding of identity and culture and strengthen my commitment to social justice.
