The Window Gallery

The Window is a project exhibition space of the Temple University Rome Department of Art & Architecture.  It is envisioned as an experimental venue for students, faculty, and members of the Roman art community.

Strategically located at the street entrance of Temple Rome’s Studio Art Annex, The Window opens outward, a perfect place for students, faculty, and local artists to showcase their works.

During Spring 2026, The Window programming commences with a continuously revolving series of mini exhibitions by Temple Rome faculty.  Each week, on Tuesday morning, a new artist will inhabit the Window.

William Pettit

Westward Wind/ For Grace Received

A collection of original paintings, vintage ex-votos and relics. 2025

This piece is a continuation of my work on historical paintings with the sea as a symbol of travel, distance, and expatriation.

This piece is an exploration of primitive devotional painting traced through Italian votive painting, objects, and reliquaries present in many Italian churches, and part of popular devotional practice. PGR (Per Grazia Ricevuta) are humble offerings of hope and of thanks for answered prayers-- for grace received.

It consists of six original oil paintings on panel and five “found” pieces (two relics and three ex-votos) mounted on panel of red brocade in a vintage frame measuring 50 x 70 cm.

William A. Pettit III is a professor, painter, poet, and part time farmer. He received a Temple University OVPR Arts and Humanities Grant in 2019, a TUR Dean’s research Grant in 2024, and a Professional Development Grant in 2025 to conduct research on the origins of painting materials and cross-cultural exchange. He teaches Darkroom Photography, Fresco Painting, and Painting Materials and Techniques at TUR. www.williampettitart.com
