Access your TUportal and Rome Portal

All your Next Steps and requirements are posted in your TUportal and Rome Portal. These portals will track your progress as you complete important steps as an admitted student.

You access both portals with your AccessNet username and password (TUX#####). Please check these portals often as your Next Steps will be updated frequently throughout the summer. These portals track your progress as you complete important steps as an admitted student.

Confirm you have a valid passport

Non-EU resident students (including students from the U.S.A.) will need a valid passport to study in Rome. Italy requires your passport to be valid for three (3) months beyond your scheduled departure from the Schengen area.

You must have a valid passport in-hand by June 1 if you are required to apply for student visa (see next section). If you do not have a passport or it expires before August (August at the end of your first academic year of study), follow the steps below to apply for a new one:

Passport Application

United States citizens can obtain a passport application and view procedures on the State Department’s travel website. NON-US Citizens should check the passport application process for their country.

U.S. Passport Regular Processing

During times of normal operation, getting a passport can take up to eight (8) weeks with regular processing or up to three (3) weeks with expedited processing for an additional fee.

U.S. Passport Expedited Processing

You should begin the expedited application process immediately if routine processing will not provide you with a passport before June 1. Please follow the steps below immediately:

  • Make the first available appointment with the Regional Passport Agency closest to you. The 24-hour automated appointment system phone number is (877) 487-2778. Do not simply mail or submit a passport application to any agency with the extra fee to expedite; you must make an appointment to apply through a Regional Agency to obtain a passport in time.

  • Contact  to request a letter from us explaining that you need a passport to meet a visa-related deadline.

  • Review passport application instructions and fees on the State Department’s website. Select “Expedited at Agency” for the processing type.

  • Gather the required materials and check your Regional Passport Agency’s website for any additional instructions.

  • Bring your appointment confirmation number, letter from Temple Rome, and passport application materials to your appointment and wait for your passport to be processed. If you cannot pick up the passport in person, you will need to submit a pre-paid USPS Priority Mail Express return envelope with your passport application.

Apply for an Italian student visa

A student visa is required for study in Italy for the academic year if you are not a European Union passport holder. Visit this page to confirm if you are required to apply for a student visa.

Gathering the required materials for the visa application may take several weeks. One requirement includes providing financial documentation that you have access to approximately $1,000 USD per month for the duration of your stay in Italy. You may need to visit your and/or your parent/guardian’s bank to obtain this financial documentation. We strongly encourage you to leave sufficient time to gather the required materials.

You need to submit your passport with your visa application and may not receive it back until shortly before the program start date. Therefore, we strongly discourage students from traveling internationally between the program application deadline and the official program start date. If you must be abroad between the program application deadline and the official program start date, please contact  immediately to discuss the feasibility of your plans.

U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents Currently Living in the U.S.

Specific instructions for the visa application are made available within the Rome Portal. Temple Rome and the Education Abroad Office will assist you throughout the process. You must submit your visa application directly to Temple's Education Abroad Office by June 1 and we will deliver it to the Italian Consulate.

International Students or U.S. Students Living Outside of the U.S.

Specific instructions for the visa application are made available within the Rome Portal and a Temple Rome staff member will contact you directly via your Temple email to assist you. Please check this email regularly. You will receive required documents by mail and must apply for the visa directly through the consulate in your region.

Requirements and processing times vary by student citizenship and consulate, and consulates base their processing times on the official program dates rather than individual travel plans. Please note that some consulates require students to submit visa applications in person.

FAQs

When will I get my housing assignment?

All Bachelor's Degree first-year students will be housed at a student residence. Students will receive their roommate assignments upon arrival in Rome. We aim to satisfy all mutual roommate requests via the Housing Request Form on the Rome Portal.

Why is my Bridge Scholarship award not showing up in my portal?

This award will not be seen on your TUportal or financial aid offer, however, it will be reflected on your tuition bill, disbursed evenly across Fall and Spring semesters.

Does Temple Rome offer meal plans?

Temple University Rome does not offer a meal plan option for students. All student housing options have a kitchen, including the student dorm residence which has a shared kitchen; we encourage students to explore Rome's many open-air markets, grocery stores, and dining options. Temple Rome has arranged several "discount" meal options around the campus, and details of these programs will be shared at Orientation upon arrival.
