Surface Tension
Temple University Rome presents a juried printmaking exhibition of Masters students from the Rome University of Fine Art (RUFA).
Inauguration: June 3 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Organized by Professors Gianna Bentivenga and Devin Kovach, in collaboration with Shara Wasserman, Temple Rome Gallery Director
Printmaking processes are not merely techniques of reproduction, but a series of physical gestures capable of imbuing material with profound meaning, transforming the creative act into a powerful metaphorical device usually kept hidden within the secrecy of the studio.
This exhibition celebrates printed works that transcend the conventional limits of prints on paper. The simple imprint expands to become a space, a body, a living narrative; making evident printmaking’s metaphorical power. The works on display, created by Masters students at the Rome University of Fine Arts (RUFA) and selected through an open call, demonstrate the vitality of academic research in the Roman art scene, redefining graphic art as a multidimensional expressive language.
The exhibition reveals a shift toward more immersive forms of expression. Prints push out into space, transforming into sculpture and installation; or expand into hybrid forms where the engraved image engages in a new dialogue with contemporary media. In this vision, even the traditional concept of the print run is dismantled to prioritize the unique piece, the metamorphosis of the image, and its intrinsic variability. Each artist draws upon the history of printmaking to amplify their voice, transforming the printing process into an act of intellectual and spatial inquiry.
Exhibiting Artists include:
Chiara Cernieri | Adam Derums | Michelle Hyland | Nolwenn Keraudren | Michelle Kuruwitaarachchi | Pilar Menocal | William Mistouflet | Dorin Mogda | Raquel Nache Lopez | Ana-Gabriela Purecel | Hideyoshi Sato | Pedro Henrique Semplício
The date to discover how this new generation is redefining the boundaries of the graphic arts is set for June 3, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Temple Rome Gallery of Art at Via San Sebastianello 16, just a stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps.
The exhibition will be on display until June 18th.
